StemCore Laboratories is a high-throughput genomics facility within the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI), and is a core facility of the University of Ottawa. StemCore Laboratories is developing a world-class infrastructure for genomics and is capable of facilitating large-scale scientific research and biotechnology projects. Stemcore Laboratories seeks out projects that are challenging, cutting-edge, extend the boundaries of biological knowledge, and will positively impact the state of human health.
Background
StemCore Laboratories (http://www.StemCore.ca), located on the 5th Floor of the Ottawa General Hospital Critical Care Wing, was established in 2002 as a shared resource facility to provide research-enabling technology to the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa. StemCore operates with a dual mandate: to support high throughput 'omics' projects in Eastern Ontario and to provide research-enabling technology to the scientific community.
Initial operating funding was received through Genome Canada, the Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI), and the Stem Cell Network. Infrastructure funding was provided by CFI/OIT and ORDCF, underwriting the major instruments and supporting equipment. Recent funding obtained from CFI and The Ottawa Hospital Foundation has contributed to the expansion of our next generation sequencing, flow cytometry, and single cell analysis services.
Although initially acquired to support of “The Stem Cell Genomics Project”, a major, multi-year initiative, StemCore’s unique platforms and technical expertise have benefitted the local Ottawa scientific community, and more broadly throughout Ontario, Canada, and beyond. Consolidation of several major research enabling technology platforms within StemCore has led to a streamlined management infrastructure and development, implementation, and adherence to codified Standard Operating Procedures. Centralization of this research infrastructure moreover, has benefited end-users through economies of scale from bulk purchase of basic reagents and consumables, and avoidance of costs associated with the provision and operation of duplicated, dedicated facilities.
The major laboratory services provided by StemCore include: Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting; Next Generation Sequencing; Sanger DNA Sequencing; and Single Cell analysis. For a complete description of the services provided in each facility please consult the website.
