MDACC Research Histology Core Laboratory

Overview of Services

Mission

The purpose of the Research Histology Core Laboratory (RHCL) is to advance the research mission of MD Anderson Cancer Center by consistently delivering high-quality histological and molecular techniques, expert consultation, and technical support. Our goal is to empower both internal and external investigators in their pursuit of innovative, cancer-focused research by providing reliable, cutting-edge tissue-based methodologies that support the ultimate objective of eliminating cancer.

History

Since 1981, MD Anderson Cancer Center has provided peer-funded research projects with histological support through a shared resource facility dedicated to tissue processing and slide preparation. What began as a routine histology service has transformed into the sophisticated Research Histology Core Laboratory (RHCL), responding to the evolving demands of translational and experimental research.

The RHCL has continuously expanded its capabilities to support the diverse needs of investigators by offering expert technical support, consultation, and the development and application of advanced tissue-based technologies. We maintain the highest standards of quality and consistency across a wide range of services. In addition to conventional histologic techniques, our offerings include special stains, serial sectioning, preparations for immunohistochemistry, histochemistry, and in situ hybridization, frozen sectioning, cell line processing, and tissue microarray sectioning with an emphasis on tissue conservation, among other techniques.

Funding

The RHCL is supported by the National Cancer Institute through Award Number 2P30CA016672-48.

Disclaimer

The Research Histology Core Laboratory (RHCL) is not certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA). As such, RHCL does not provide chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH), fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), immunohistochemical staining, tissue microarray preparation, or any other service for the purpose of reporting patient-specific results related to the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of disease, or the assessment of an individual’s health status (42 CFR Ch. IV, 493.3.b.2). All services are strictly intended for research use only.
