BioMMed Core Facilities

Overview of Services

Welcome to the GeneLab, managed by the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, Division of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine (BIOMMED).

The GeneLab iLab portal (iLab Organizer :: Welcome!) provides access to equipment scheduling and training, core service requests, and purchasing from select vendors at discounted prices. GeneLab provides access to a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment and technologies supporting INBRE (https://lbrn.lsu.edu/) / COBRE (https://www.lsu.edu/vetmed/cpccr/index.php; https://www.lsu.edu/vetmed/clbd/index.php) project PIs and other biomedical researchers.

A major goal of the GeneLab is to maximize the value of having diverse services, technologies, and expertise available through a centralized core facility network. GeneLab shared resources include laboratories and facilities at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, LSU’s main campus, and the Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC) in Covington, Louisiana. These resources are available to support research, training, and the development of new methods and applications.

GeneLab

GeneLab provides a broad range of molecular biology and genomics services, including:

  • QuantStudio 6Pro/12K Flex Real-time PCR
  • AbsoluteQ Digital PCR
  • Agilent fragment analyzer
  • High-throughput DNA and RNA sequencing
  • Next-generation sequencing (MiSeq 550 and 2000)
  • Single Cell sequencing (10X Genomics)
  • Bioinformatics (IPA, MOE…)

GeneLab also operates a Supply Center offering scientific reagents and supplies from Life Technologies (formerly Applied Biosystems and Invitrogen). Discounted pricing has been negotiated with select vendors to provide researchers with cost-effective access to commonly used research supplies.

Free shipping is available for orders shipped directly to GeneLab. For most orders, this can provide an additional 15–25% in savings. Investigators may also choose to pick up their orders from GeneLab, located in Room 3212 of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, at no additional cost. Alternatively, orders can be delivered for a minimal additional fee.

Protein Laboratory (PLC)

The Protein Laboratory (PLC) provides services in:

  • Protein expression and purification
  • Peptide synthesis and analysis
  • Protein–protein interaction studies

Molecular Immunopathology Core (MIPC)

The Molecular Immunopathology Core (MIPC) provides a range of advanced services, including:

  • Advanced imaging and microscopy
  • Flow cytometry
  • Cell sorting
  • Luminex assays
  • Histopathology
  • Immunochemistry
  • Multiplex cytokine arrays

These services support research conducted through COBRE- and INBRE-funded programs. Fee policies are established in accordance with applicable federal regulations and Louisiana State University guidelines governing shared research core facilities.
