The Crump Institute's Preclinical Imaging Technology Center advances state-of-the-art small animal imaging. It functions both as a shared preclinical imaging resource for UCLA researchers and as a hub for emerging imaging research and technology development. The same technologies and services are also available to the larger research community including other academic institutes and industry groups through contract work.

These innovative technologies have allowed our researchers to observe, measure and ultimately understand biological processes in vivo, assess animal models of health and disease, and monitor and determine efficacy of novel therapies.

Imaging Services include:

- positron emission tomography (microPET)
- computed tomography (microCT)

- bioluminescence imaging (BLI)

- fluorescence imaging
- magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- radiolabeling lab and workspace
- tissue and whole body digital autoradiography
- automatic gamma counter
- cell culture hood and workspace

Imaging Systems include:
- two combined PET/CT scanner (Genisys8 and GNEXT)
- one stand-alone MRI scanner (Aspect M2)
- two stand-alone CT scanners (CrumpCAT and HiCT)
- two combined bioluminenscence/fluorescence imaging systems (IVIS Lumina II)

Companion PET tracer radiochemistry and radiolabeling facilities are available in-house. Adjacent to the Imaging Center is a barrier facility for housing animals before and after imaging with biosafety cabinets for animal procedures. The facility is fully certified for animal, radiation, laboratory, biological (BSL2) and chemical safety procedures.

Our operations are fully supported by expert imaging faculty of the Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging, also based in CNSI.

Location

The Imaging Center is uniquely housed in the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) in the Court of Sciences, a central location at the heart of UCLA’s scientific community. It is appropriately surrounded by the David Geffen School of Medicine, Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology Institute, among many others.
